With post-secondary training in both Music (MacEwan University) and Education (University of Alberta B.A. English, B. Ed. Science), Chris is currently working towards his Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) teaching accreditation and his Masters of Arts in Medieval Music Studies. His thesis research will focus on the late Medieval transition of Sacred to Secular music, tracing lyrical content and musical motifs through this shift in European self-expression.
The harmonic exploration and freedom demonstrated by the secular musicians (folk pop troubadours) of the Late Medieval period can inspire musical composition today. By further intentional use of less familiar musical tensions, and sonic colours of the past, artists can expand the palette of modern popular music. This ideal, in combination with his modern musical theatre learning, inspires Chris’ current compositional projects.
